We have our project broken into epics >> stories >> tasks and I had a question about story point estimation for each
Should Sum( all tasks under a story ) = Total points for a story? ( or do you stop points at story level )?
AND
Sum( all stories under an epic ) = Total points for an epic?
If so, what is the best way to go about making sure these are in sync without constantly checking the math. Here's the problem I am facing. We have an epic that we do not know much about..except that is it a Xlarge effort. If I assign it 21 points then start breaking into stories and tasks, I am concerned that the story points for the stories in this epic may exceed 21.
Hi Ravina,
This is a limitation on JIRA for now; JSWSERVER-8726. Stories' estimation does not sum up to the Epic's estimation. At the moment, JIRA will treat Epic's estimation separately to it's linked Stories.
You may look at some third-party plugins, according to this Community Thread, Epic Sum Up plugin might do the trick.
I hope that this helps.
Cheers,
Moga
Why on earth is such a simple feature, which a Google search will clearly indicate is a basic expectation of most users, left as an implementation exercise for a Marketplace developer who charges the cost of Jira (ie the whole platform) for what amounts to a trivial enhancement - (or even a bugfix).
