What is the best way to handle future tasks in jira?

Hi,

I was wondering what would be the best way to add a task that will not be relevant for quite some time in a way where it will not be showing up everywhere until it is due?

For example I need to schedule a certificate update in a few years from now, but I do not want to see the issue until it starts to become relevant.

Interesting question. I would do one of two things:

  • create a future tasks project in place of issues in there that you don’t wish to see. Then I would use automation or some scripting to monitor the due date and move to the appropriate project once it’s time.
  • create a unique status “future” in your current project. Configure all boards and filters to exclude this status. Again use Automation to move the issue to a new status like To Do when appropriate.

Thank you for the suggestion, I was hopping to find a simpler solution. Currently I am leaning to just making a done task and put a team meeting in the calendar with reference to the task. I really do not want to have to modify all the filters.

This is something we have struggled with as well. We also haven't found an elegant solution. For the time being, we have a sprint where we stash future tasks 😬 So they are at least out of the way.
