When exploring/discovering an idea, prior to deciding whether to go ahead and deliver we want to be able to create an exploration/discovery Jira epic with doscovery tasks for the idea.

We would like to add a field similar to "delivery progress" and "delivery status" but which tracks discovery Jiras  in addition to delivery Jiras. This will allow us to provide visibility of the discovery process itself.

Is this possible?

@Paul Charsley a dedicated tab would be very welcome! While discovery tasks aren't very standardised, being able to view how a product team is validating an idea or feedback would be very useful!

If you wanted to o this today, you could link tickets in the normal Jira way. Perhaps even take it a step further an create a custom link called "explores" and "explores by".

Regards,

Hey Paul, great question. A couple of options for you:

1. As @Chris Timms said, you can create an Epic for those discovery tasks, and the progress bar will give you the high level perspective on progress. You can create a view that's filtered for the ideas 'In Discovery' and the progress bar will give you the high level perspective across ideas.

2. Create fields of the type Checkbox for each phase of your Discovery. eg. Requirements approved, Designs approved, spikes completed. Then you can create a view which has columns for each of these columns and you'll be able to see in a single view where all your ideas are up to.

3. In the description of each idea, add action items for these Discovery tasks. These are lightweight and can be copied across ideas as part of the description template.

it would be incredibly powerful to be able to define variations of the Delivery connection!

for my company, we'd want to have Discovery, R&D, and Delivery each split out with their own progress bar and associated epic(s)

At the moment we're lumping it all in together and tracking the progress of each phase manually using a dropdown (todo | doing | done | N/A)

Hi @Paul Charsley We use the following statuses: Discovery To do, Discovery in Progress, Delivery to Do, Delivery in Progress. I have created custom date fields for each "in progress" status, which are Discovery Start Date, Discovery End Date, Delivery Start Date, and Delivery End Date. This provides us the epic beginning-to-end story.
