Managing Work Breakdown

How are others using Product Discovery to manage the work breakdown tied to ideas? Ideas always have a ton of tasks associated with them, some requiring development, some just business tasks. Would be great to be able to have a view of the tasks that product managers have to oversee along with owners, status, etc. and be able to put that in a board view. I tried adding the Smart Checklist Pro add-on, but doesn't look like it works with JPD.

Hi @Alison Clough

Oleksandr from Smart Checklist team here.

It would be great to have a checklist in Product Discovery projects indeed to track all the tasks associated with an idea. Unfortunately, at the moment all add-ons are not supported in Product Discovery (https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Product-Discovery-questions/Marketplace-apps-for-JPD-timeline-or-roadmap/qaq-p/2646240)

As a workaround, we can think of three options:
(1) If you have a pre-defined set of steps for each idea (e.g. research, prepare design, approve, etc.), you can use checkbox fields for that;
(2) You can also link issues with the tasks breakdown. The card view will only show the number of issues though;
(3) Comments can also help, like adding your tasks as comments. Although this option gives you less structure.

Hi @Alison Clough

JPD is meant to be used in conjunction with Jira Software for the delivery phase. We use it that way and attach related tickets in the respective tab.

If you have business users that have tasks that cannot "live" inside the Jira cosmos that makes it harder of course. But i would try to get them there. You could also use Jira Work Management for these people. Comparison: https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/work-management/product-guide/jwm-vs-jsw

Could be a licensing/cost issue though.

Thanks for your input. Our development efforts are being managed in JSW (in process of migrating from DC to Cloud).  We also have some business teams working in Jira Work Management (now 'just Jira"). This is more for the product managers themselves to manage all the tasks and communication on their side. Our product managers are not in JPD at the moment, but when they do, I can assume they would love to be able to manage their work for their ideas within the JPD project rather than jump to something else. But, I suppose if they use a JWM project, they can just link to that to see the detail. Anyway, just predicting what the product managers might say.

@Alison Clough

Sounds like an ideal setup to link the tickets in JPD. Then you can related work in the idea itself. If you want to build a filter to show only related tickets, you can use something like this (https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-questions/How-to-search-all-linked-issues-with-issues-from-specific/qaq-p/1027269) to show only tickets that have the relation "implements" with your JPD project. This would show you all related work. You might need a plugin or add-on like Script Runner to achieve this though.
