Feature spanning multiple PIs on the roadmap?

Hello, I'm setting up a project roadmap in Jira Align, and I've got features that will happen over more than one increment.  Does the Jira Align roadmap support this?

So far it looks like it doesn't, but I wanted to ask before I break up my features any further!

Erika, the short answer is yes. Though you do want to break your features down so that they can be completed in a single increment, adding start and target dates will allow you to do what you want...but there is a caveat.

Within your feature, click on +Full Details to expand the feature

Below that, add your feature start and completion dates.

When using the Roadmap, you'll see a toggle. Sprint by 'Increment" and Month by Quarter. Use the Month by Quarter to view the feature beyond the increment.

In the feature, when selecting an Increment, think of this as the Increment you plan to finish the feature in. When selecting dates, think of this as covering the whole timeframe that you're referring to.

Hope this solves your issue!

The short answer is No.

If we have increments set up by calendar quarters, there is no way to cleanly show on the roadmap that we will be starting the work in the middle of March and that the work will finish in the middle of April. Waiting until a quarter boundary to start a new highest priority work item that takes a month of work -- that is the opposite of agility.

Remember these...?

  • "Responding to change over following a plan"

  • "Welcome changing requirements, even late in development. Agile processes harness change for the customer's competitive advantage."

Too many functions of Align are linked to just one "program increment", so the planning is incoherent when work spans two "program increments" even by a few days or weeks.

This is a huge limitation for Align, and prevents teams that are doing continuous planning from getting the value out of the product.

@Derek Huether

What about the work done in sprints in multiple quarters? In Program Room I see misaligned stories. I also get messages on Roadmap screen. Will this cause reporting errors with only one PI selected for the feature but the work done in multiple PIs? Will velocity calculations be accurate?
