Quarterly Performance and Scale Digest: September 2024

Hello, Atlassian Community! Matt Ogle here from the Enterprise Product Marketing team. I'm excited to bring you the September edition of our Quarterly Performance and Scale Digest, where we highlight the latest improvements and upcoming investments in Atlassian Cloud performance and scalability.

Enterprise organizations need platforms that can flexibly scale and seamlessly perform amidst rising complexity and demands. That’s why Atlassian continues to refine how our platform works, adding new tools and features that empower organizations of any size or maturity to unleash their full potential. In this Quarterly Digest, we are excited to show you our latest advancements in Atlassian Cloud performance and scale.

Enterprise-grade scalability

Here are the newest enhancements to Atlassian Cloud scalability:

150,000 users for Confluence Cloud [GA by end of 2024]

We are in our final sprints to bring you support for 150,000 users on a single Confluence site by the end of 2024. This 200% increase in user support will unlock new ways for your teams to use Confluence, and we encourage you to start exploring how you can take advantage of this. Here are a few use cases where it is beneficial to have the entire organization on one single Confluence site:

  • Utilizing the same knowledge base for information sharing across the organization.

  • Executing cross-functional projects that require multiple business units in one space.

  • Running company-wide programs like strategic announcements and training programs.

Performance optimizations

Here are the newest enhancements to Atlassian Cloud performance:

Project cleanup for Site Optimizer in Jira

Site Optimizer functionality for Jira Enterprise plans has expanded to include bulk project cleanup, in addition to already supported attributes like custom fields and issues. Project cleanup shows admins when project counts reach the recommended threshold, provides recommendations on projects to clean up, and enables cleanups to be easily done. With a couple of clicks, old or inactive projects can be archived or trashed in bulk. This allows admins to efficiently manage large volumes of projects, reducing site clutter and ultimately improving site performance for enterprises.

Bulk Ops APIs in Jira

Bulk Edit and Bulk Move APIs are now publicly available for all Jira plans. These APIs enable users to automate issue operations in bulk, increasing operational efficiency and reducing manual errors within Jira. For example, a team member can quickly reassign hundreds of issues to a new owner with just a few clicks. Furthermore, because these bulk issue updates take place within the API, you can continue working in your existing Jira tab while they occur.

Bulk Move and Bulk Delete Worklog APIs in Jira

Whilst Bulk Ops APIs focus on managing large volumes of issues at once, Bulk Move and Bulk Delete Worklog APIs focus on managing large volumes of worklogs within a single issue. You can quickly move worklogs in bulk from one issue to another or delete them altogether. This boost in efficiency eliminates repetitive work so that you have more time to focus on key priorities. It also prevents data loss by transferring worklogs to another issue instead of deleting it altogether.

Performance improvements in Confluence

Before discussing the latest performance improvements to Confluence, I wanted to share that we’ve shifted our primary Confluence performance metric from TTI (Time to Interactive) to TTVC (Time to Visual Completeness). We made this decision to better capture the full page loading experience rather than the time it takes for the page to first become interactive. This update will keep page contents steady as it loads, giving you a smoother and more polished experience.

With that said, we are pleased to share the following performance improvements made to Confluence since the beginning of July 2024:

  • View Page and View Space transition times have decreased by 9.6%. This was achieved by fixing layout reflows, as well as unnecessary delays when transitioning between pages.

  • View Page initial load times have decreased by 11.1%, and View Space Overview initial load times decreased by 14.9%. We achieved this by improving render rates for prominent features like the Page Tree.
