Paid research opportunity - Custom links in the Application Navigator

Hi 👋! My name is Niraj and I’m a designer at Atlassian working on ways to improve the user experience of the Atlassian application navigator.

We’re looking to improve how custom links are setup and displayed in the application navigator.

The application navigator

Custom links appear in the application navigator under 'MORE'.

Admins add and manage custom links in Jira and/or in Confluence.

What’s involved

  • 45 min Zoom interview

  • We may share designs and concepts for your feedback

  • A $100 USD thank you gift awaits you after the session

What we’re looking for

We want to learn:

  • How and what custom links are used for,

  • How they’re setup and managed, and

  • How the experience of setting up, managing, and displaying custom links could be improved

We want to talk to admins who set up custom links in Jira or Confluence to display to end-users in the application navigator.

If you're an end user who uses custom links, please feel free to also sign up, and we'll assess each case individually.

Criteria

In order to be selected, you'll need:

  • To be in an organization that uses Jira and/or Confluence

  • A laptop/computer, access to a stable internet connection, and be willing to screen share

Hey @Niraj Patil - I've signed up for the opportunity, but since it's clear you work on the Application Navigator team, I wonder if I could offer some frank feedback here.

While your screenshot shows the Navigator in the context of somebody already working in Jira or Confluence, I believe the same code is used on the https://www.atlassian.com home page, and product pages for Jira and Confluence.

I think whomever owns that page thinks that's an "easy" way for existing Jira/Confluence users to find and navigate to their sites.

I regret to inform you that this is not the case.

Because my users, and those of many other admins, are having to deal with accidentally created sites because people ignore the unlabeled 3x3 button (that's right, in 2024, people still don't recognize the hamburger or... what do you call this, a tic-tac-toe, button?)

Instead, they are clicking on the BIG BLUE "Get started" button.

And we end up with accidental sites: Why is Atlassian promoting Shadow IT? Or Accidental IT?

So, I spent some time today pondering the make.page, jira.new, and confluence.new shortcuts and how they have a magical redirect to https://id.atlassian.com/gateway/api/product-redirect?product=jira and https://id.atlassian.com/gateway/api/product-redirect?product=confluence

Those links are able to "figure out" what site you are logged into, and it will redirect you to the issue or page create workflow. If a new product could be created like "jira-home" or "jira-default", it conceivably redirect you just to the home page for your sites. Link this to a simple "Sign in" or "Log in" button on those product pages, and I think that would prevent most of the accidental site creations.

Yes, I know this isn't your department. But surely you know somebody on the main Atlassian.com page since they're implementing the Navigator.

Thanks for attending my TED Talk.
