Using variable sin templates in confluence cloud

I am using Confluence Cloud.

I have read the documentation on creating templates with variables. I can add a new variable but if I try to refer to that variable elsewhere it doeasn't work.

The documentation says "Type $ and the variable name, then press Enter to add a new variable or to select an existing variable from a list of suggestions. The suggestions dialog shows variables already defined in this template."

Typing $ does nothing at all other than put on the page a $ followed by what is typed. I havetried inserting the variable a 2nd time with the same name and I get an error when I save.

In a template how do I refer to a variable that has already been created?
