Table of contents not showing in Preview mode

Our TOC macro is not displayed in preview mode. There is a suggested fix on this page: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-questions/Table-of-content-not-showing-in-preview/qaq-p/1570774#U2484272
However, we cannot change our page layouts. Does anyone know how to fix this?
We are on Confluence Data Center version 8.5.
