Include picture that is already available as attachment

Simon Mayr November 30, 2024

Dear All,

I'm currently facing an issue with confluence when I want to include a picture (or file) that is already uploaded into a site.
The macro for including files and pictures only has 2 options "upload from PC" and "upload from link". Some time ago there was also an option "from existing files".

Can someone tell me, if this is some kind of a setting that I have failed to set or if this funciton has been removed? Is there another way to add existing files in sites?

Thank you for your support.
I'd appreciate any hint.

Best Regards
Simon

Hi @Simon Mayr ,

I would suggest taking a look at the following answer: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-questions/Re-Re-Confluence-page-missing-attachments-files/qaq-p/2880444/comment-id/328321#M328321

In short, this option isn't available in Confluence Cloud (new editor) but you can vote on feature suggestion related to it: CONFCLOUD-65344 - Allow adding attachments from a page or space on Fabric editor

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Tom

@Simon Mayr , based on your latest reply, I would again point out my initial answer.

When you add an attachment with the same name to the page and publish the page, two things happen:

  1. Everywhere where the 'old' attachment was used (within the page), a new file will be displayed instead. Informational modal will be displayed at the bottom of the page.

  2. In the Attachments section of the page (More actions (three dots) > Attachments > Files), a new version of the same attachment will be created but you can still access/download the old one.

👉 So, to 'reattach' the initial (or any other) version of the file, navigate to the Attachments section, download that attachment version, and re-upload the file in the page editor.

Currently, that's the only native way to 'select'/re-use existing attachments on the page.

Cheers,
Tom

Hi Simon,

As part of developing our app I've looked into this issue quite a bit and there is sadly no way of doing what you're looking for without using APIs and crafting your own ADF at this point in time.

We've got "existing attachments" support on our roadmap for our Images feature. (We're aiming for a release of this addition in the next few weeks).

Hi @Simon Mayr
Just thought I'd let you know that we've now released the existing attachments support for our app.
It lets you pick & search for attachments on the same page, same space, or even across your whole instance.

I'd thought I'd let you know in case you're still looking for a solution.
If you decide to give it a try, feel free to reach out in case you need a demo or any other assitance.

Regards,
Jeff

Hi @Simon Mayr

Unfortunately, it is not supported...

A workaround is to use Excerpt and Except include to get a picture from another page, or mutliexcerpt if you have several pictures in the same page that you intend to re-use elsewhere.

Thanks for your feedback and sorry, I think I wasn't clear enough.

I don't want to refer to a file from another site but to a file that is already added as attachment to the current side.
Specifically, I have uploaded a new version of a picture, with the same name. I wasn't sure, if the page content shows automatically always the newest version of the file that is already included. As the image did not update, I went into edit-mode of the page, deleted the image and wanted to select the image from the attachements. But there was only the option to upload a new file from the PC.

Cheers,
Simon

@Simon Mayr When you uploaded a new version with the same file name to the Attachments page, it should have updated the image on the page automatically. You may just need to refresh the page to see the update.

Once you removed the image from the page, however, you cannot reattach it from the Attachments page (as @Tomislav Tobijas _Koios_ explained).

Next time, you should be able to just upload the new file on the attachments page and refresh the page. If that doesn't work, you could clear your cache and refresh.
