Google Drive for Confluence (by Atlassian) not working with video files

Jason Hayman February 3, 2020

We use the 'Google Drive for Confluence' app to embed videos stored in Google Drive in a Confluence page. I find it very unreliable. My steps to embed are simple:

  1. while editing, click Files & Images link at top of page
  2. choose Google Drive
  3. follow the directory to find the file I want
  4. choose the video file

Once the page is published, sometimes the video will show a preview/thumbnail and will play as expected. At other times there is no preview, there is only a grey box as shown below. (There is not much to see, really.) Clicking in the box does nothing. Nothing plays.

Anyone else experience this? Do you know of a way to produce reliable results? Is there something I'm missing? Is this a bug? What other ways are there to embed videos in Confluence Cloud?

Thanks in advance for the help.

PS. I know about linking out to Google Drive and playing the video there and have used that in the past. I prefer to minimize the external page loads where possible.
