Hey everyone 👋 Christina here from the Fabric product team.

We’re currently working on developing shapes for Fabric.

We’d be keen to hear your answers to the following questions… (feel free to write in the comments below)

  1. What do you use shapes for?
  2. What workflows do you use shapes for?
  3. What shapes do you most commonly use (top 3-5)?
  4. How important are colour options & fill/no-fill?
  5. How important is text alignment when typing in shapes? Do you commonly centre align or left/right align your text in shapes?

Thanks,

Christina | Product Manager, Fabric

Hi Christina,

I primarily use squares and rectangles for shapes (I also turn squares to make them diamonds).  The only thing I can think of for circles would be voting dots and creating targets.

Color is very important for me.  I do a lot of mapping and I use color to differentiate between things like:

  • Personas
  • Status - great way to get a quick visual of progress.  can change the entire color of a shape to show when it moves between status's or can overlay one shape with another with a different color and as work progresses make the overlay shape consume more
  • Resource type
  • Information types (for instance if the shape is yellow it is a question that needs to be answered, or pink a potential risk area)
  • On text, alignment isn't critical for me, what is important, text size.  Great when it changes automatically to accommodate where needed.  Sometimes I need to put more information in one shape than another, but I want the size of the shape to stay the same.  A lot of times I am typing this information during a conversation (mapping the conversation) and can't stop to adjust font size.

I'll send you some screen shots if you need them!

Jeanne
