Introducing Integrate with AWS for Compass

Hello Compass community 👋 It’s Dave from the Compass integrations team, and we’ve got an awesome announcement for those of you who are using AWS!

Amazon Web Services has become one of the most widely used tools allowing teams to easily deploy, scale and manage their software in the cloud. Atlassian itself has been running its cloud software on AWS for nearly five years, and for many of you the story is very similar.

Today we’re thrilled to introduce Integrate with AWS, a brand new Compass app that helps you integrate AWS with your DevOps workflows in Compass. This app enables you to:

  • Import AWS resources as Compass components

  • Follow contextual deep links from your components to associated AWS resources and dashboards

  • Inspect AWS resource details in Compass, to track health and compliance

The Integrate with AWS app is available today - keep reading to learn more.

Connect your AWS environment

The Integrate with AWS app begins by helping you connect your AWS environment(s) to Compass. You can connect an AWS environment (an account/region combination) via a CloudFormation stack, or you can bulk connect one or more environments via a stack set.

Import AWS resources

Once you’ve connected your AWS environments, you can begin importing resources into Compass as new components. You can do this in one of two ways:

  • Import a single resource manually via its Amazon Resource Name (ARN)

  • Import multiple resources in bulk by applying the tag utoolity:atlassian:compass:component to those resources in the AWS console.

You can also associate an existing Compass component to an AWS resource by supplying its ARN on the component page in Compass.

Contextual Links to AWS dashboards

Every component that is associated with an AWS resource features a deep link to the resource dashboard in the AWS console. Depending on the component type, there will also be supplementary deep links to more advanced contextual dashboards provided by other AWS services like AWS Config or AWS Systems Manager Application Manager.

Inspecting AWS resource details

To get more details about AWS resources associated with a Compass component, use the “AWS resources” tab on the component sidebar. There you’ll find applicable health and compliance results, and additional deep links to the AWS console.

All thanks to Utoolity - and there’s more to come

This powerful new app was developed by Utoolity, an Atlassian Marketplace partner that specializes in utilities and tools integrating Atlassian products with AWS. They’ve got plans to add more features to this app in the future. Let them know what you think in the comments!

Huge shout-out to @Steffen Opel _Utoolity_ and the team at Utoolity, who the built the app using the Atlassian Forge platform. Check out our developer docs to learn how you can build your own apps using Forge.

Thanks for the great introduction @Dave Parrish _Atlassian_!

We are very excited about the Compass platform and especially its built-in extensibility atop Forge. We've started this app to address our own pain points in managing the serverless AWS backends for our Atlassian app portfolio. As Dave mentioned, we plan to fully utilize all capabilities of the evolving Compass platform, and we are currently exploring how to enrich the integration with AWS events and metrics, for example:

  • Ingestion of AWS service events into the Compass activity stream - notable candidates are AWS Config configuration and compliance change events, AWS Tagging events, and of course CloudFormation deployment events for AWS resources associated with a Compass component
  • Ingestion of applicable AWS resource metrics, and ideally providing sensible default scorecards for AWS workloads like 'AWS compliance score' (AWS Config) and 'AWS security score' (AWS Security Hub)

We'd love to get your feedback! Let us know which AWS integrations for Compass would simplify the management of your distributed architecture via a comment below, or reach out to us via the Utoolity customer support portal.

This is really cool @Dave Parrish _Atlassian_!  We recently just started a POC of Compass, and being a heavy consumer of AWS this is something I will be watching intently.
