Hi community, is there a way to control how diff treats file encoding?

David Andres Ayala Munoz June 15, 2022

I'm facing some issues regarding the ANSI encoding of my VB6 files (which includes Spanish characters like á, é, í, ó, ú, and ñ, both upper and lower cases).

And when we create some PR that has nothing to do with those characters, somehow the PR always detect those character as changes, making the code review almost unmanageable because the PR has so many changes that shouldn't be there.

What I'd like to do is all file handling processes keep/respect the original file encoding, in this case ANSI.

Hi David,

I'm afraid that it is not possible to control this at the moment.

We have a feature request in our issue tracker for specifying a repository's encoding:

If you'd be interested in that feature, I would suggest adding your vote to that feature request (by selecting the Vote for this issue link) as the number of votes helps the development team and product managers better understand the demand for new features.

You are more than welcome to leave any feedback, and you can also add yourself as a watcher (by selecting the Start watching this issue link) if you'd like to get notified via email on updates.

Implementation of new features is done as per our policy here and any updates will be posted in the feature request.

Kind regards,
Theodora
