Bitbucket Slack notifications sometimes don't appear

Maria Harmaala May 17, 2024

Hi,

We are experiencing this strange issue where some commits do not appear as Slack notifications. I have subscribed for receiving Slack notifications to a repository in Bitbucket and verified that the branches and other settings are correct.

I tried to do 2 commits after another and only one of the commit showed up in the channel. I tried to connect several different repositories and we can see that some commits show up but some do not.

I have tried to subscribe/unsubcribe, and this didn't work. I have also tried to setup an entire new channel and subscribed to the repositories, but still some commits do not appear.

Has anyone experienced this issue?

Hi Maria,

I've definitely run into that before where Bitbucket Slack notifications seem to be a bit flaky. It can be frustrating to miss out on updates!

Here are a couple of things that might be causing the issue:

Authorization: Sometimes the connection between Bitbucket and Slack can get a little wonky. You can try re-authorizing the Bitbucket app in Slack. In your Slack channel, type /Bitbucket logout and then head back to your Bitbucket repository settings > Slack > Settings. Click "Add Subscription" and re-authorize the connection.

Event Types: Double-check that the specific events you want notifications for are selected in the Bitbucket settings. You can choose things like push mentions, branch creations, pull request updates, etc.

Caching: On the off chance it's a caching issue, try clearing your Slack app cache. The steps to do this will vary depending on your device, but a quick search online should help you find the specific instructions.

If you've tried these things and you're still having trouble, it might be worth reaching out to Bitbucket support. They might have some additional insights into what's going on.

Hi Matt! I have tried to re-authorize the connection a couple of times, but I haven't tried your other suggestions so I will give them a go and see if it works. If not I will reach out to the Bitbucket support. Thank you for the suggestions!

I have not experienced any issues since trying out @Matt Arnold's suggestions. I tried all three (authorization as well one more time) and it seems to be working, although it is a bit difficult to say exactly which one did the trick.

I recommend trying the suggestions for anyone experiencing these issues!
