I created the admin user and want to use a picture of me as the profile picture. But I don't see an option to upload a picture..

You are right. Bamboo does not provide the functionally to upload an Avatar to the user profiles besides configuring it with Gravatar. Please refer to Configuring Gravatar support documentation for further information.
If you are behind a firewall and you cannot reach Gravatar server, you may use some solutions like Libravatar and Surrogator and use the respective Gravatar server URL in Overview -> General Configuration.

How can I use Libravatar instead of Gravatar? Seems very weird only having support for one alternative here. Would be even better to just use the git profile picture.
