how can I get the version reference from a MAVEN parent pom?

we use maven to build our java based spring boot applications. The parent is used to be manage common dependencies that are common across a "family" of applications.

I am using the POM extractor plugin but could not get it configured to pull the parent pom reference. In the parent pom (pulled from nexus), is the line
<version>1.0.0-SNAPSHOT</version>

in the child pom, that my build plan is referencing, is a reference to the parent by it GAV.

I tried to use the maven parent version reference of ${project.version}, but it did not work. Anybody figure out how to get the parent version to use as a bamboo variable reference in later tasks?
