We have a specific requirement to merge our two Bamboo instances, one for Development (Dev) and the other for Production (Prod), into a single server. We would like to explore the feasibility of this initiative and understand the potential pros and cons associated with such a merge.

Current Setup:

Dev Bamboo Instance: Used for development and testing purposes.
Prod Bamboo Instance: Used for production build and deployment processes.

Goal:

The goal is to consolidate both instances into a single Bamboo server, streamlining our build and deployment processes for improved efficiency and maintenance.

Feasibility:

We would appreciate your expert insight into the feasibility of merging these two instances into a single server. We understand that this is a complex process, and we want to ensure it is technically feasible and aligns with best practices.

Pros and Cons:

We kindly request you to provide us with an overview of the potential pros and cons associated with the merge. Understanding these aspects will help us make informed decisions and prepare for any challenges that may arise during the process.

Steps Involved:

If the merge is feasible and beneficial, we would like to request your guidance on the recommended steps involved in accomplishing this activity. We understand that proper planning and execution are critical for a successful merge.

Timeline:

Additionally, please let us know the estimated timeline for completing the merge. We aim to minimize any downtime or disruptions to our development and production activities.

Hello @Sathiskumar,

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

Most of the migration steps must be decided on a case-by-case basis. Bamboo does not support merging instances, so you'd have to manually decide which one you will be exported as a set of Plan/Deployment "skeletons" in a configuration-as-code format and add them to the other instance.

The resulting merger will have "new/fresh" Plans/Deployments with no build history, logs, artifacts, etc. -- which you'd have to manage later.

Due to your request's complexity and potentially sensitive nature, we highly recommend contacting Atlassian Support directly by opening a ticket. They will be able to provide you with personalized guidance and assistance tailored to your specific situation. Please refer to this Community post if you decide to go that path.

Sincerely,

Hi Ed,

Thank you for your prompt response and valuable insights. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

As we consider the feasibility of merging our Dev and Prod Bamboo instances into a single server, it would be extremely beneficial to have a technical Knowledge Base (KB) that provides a comprehensive explanation of the complexities involved in this process. We are particularly interested in understanding the impacts on each internal component and how the merge could potentially affect our existing configurations and workflows.

If you are aware of any relevant technical documentation or KB resources that delve into the intricacies of this merge, we kindly request you to share the links or references with us.

Once again, thank you for your assistance, and we look forward to your guidance on this matter.

Kind Regards,

Sathiskumar
