Checkmate sensitive data with redaction through Atlassian Guard Premium

Hi Atlassian Community,

REDACTEDRemoving sensitive data can be a daunting task, so the Guard Premium team is thrilled to introduce a new method to help you mitigate the risk of sensitive data in your organization. If you’re alerted about sensitive data in Confluence, you can now redact it directly from the alert.

How does it work?

Guard Detect sends an alert when it identifies sensitive data in Confluence. This might be via one of our standard detections, or a custom detection that recognizes text that’s sensitive to your organization. This alert includes an excerpt of the detected sensitive data along with a few words of context to help analysts determine whether the content is sensitive and should be removed.

If a security analyst decides to redact the data, they can choose:

  • which instances of the data to redact, if there is more than one of the same type of data on the page.

  • to redact the sensitive data in the current version of the page, or to also delete any historical versions that contained the sensitive data, completely eradicating it from the page.

Once redacted, the sensitive data is replaced with a solid bar, and cannot be restored or undone.

Right now sensitive data can be redacted from the title and body of Confluence pages. You can’t yet redact sensitive data from comments, live pages, whiteboards, or databases, but we plan to include more content types in future.

In case you missed it, we recently introduced content scanning for Jira, and aim to make redaction available for Jira issues in the future as well.

Where to begin

These features are available with Atlassian Guard Premium.

To get started:

  1. In Guard Detect, navigate to a sensitive data alert.

  2. Review all instances of sensitive data highlighted in the alert and the suggested investigation steps.

  3. Select Redact and indicate whether you want to remove the page history.
