Average Time in Status

Average Time in Status is a metric in Jira that measures the average time that issues or tasks are spent in a particular status in your workflow. This metric helps teams understand the typical duration of tasks or issues at each stage and identify potential bottlenecks or inefficiencies.

To calculate the average time in status, you must add the total time spent by all tasks in a particular status and then divide this sum by the number of tasks. The formula looks like this:

Average time in status = (Total time spent in status by all tasks) / (Number of tasks)

Let's say you have five tasks in the In Progress status in your Jira workflow. The time each task spent in the In Progress status is as follows: 2 hours, 4 hours, 6 hours, 8 hours, and 10 hours.

To calculate the average time spent in a status: 

  1. Add up the time spent in In Progress for all tasks: 2 + 4 + 6 + 8 + 10 = 30 hours
  2. Divide the total time by the number of tasks: 30 hours / 5 tasks = 6 hours

The average time spent in the In Progress status is 6 hours.

Median Time in Status

Median Time in Status is a metric in Jira that represents the middle value of the time spent by issues or tasks in a particular status within your workflow. This metric helps teams identify the typical duration of tasks or issues in each stage, providing a more accurate representation of workflow efficiency when there are outliers or skewed data.

To calculate the Median Time in Status, you need to follow these steps: 

  1. List the time spent by all issues in a specific status in ascending order.
  2. If there is an odd number of issues, the median is the middle value.
  3. If there is an even number of issues, the median is the average of the two middle values.

Let's say you have seven tasks that have gone through the "In Review" status in your Jira workflow. The time spent in the "In Review" status for each task is as follows: 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, 5 hours, 9 hours, and 15 hours.

To calculate the Median Time in Status: 

  • Arrange the time spent in the "In Review" status in ascending order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, and 15 hours.
  • Since there are seven tasks (an odd number), the median is the middle value, and the 4th value in the sorted list is 4 hours.

 So, the Median Time in Status for the "In Review" status is 4 hours.
