Structure in JIRA - manual order of Epics is not saved

Nisan Lati October 28, 2024

Hello all,

Appreciate your help and advice here:

i order manually the order of Epics in my structure.

later i encounter 2 problems -

  1. Other users that get in the structure - dont see the order i created (they see it randomly or in default order of Structure)

  2. sometimes i get in my structure - and dont see it but the order i prepared… got back to it’s default… so need to order it again,,,

why does it happens? is it relate to the size of structure (we have more than 2000 issues there)? what is the mechanism behind? shouldn't everyone see my order?

thanks

Hello @Nisan Lati

The manually set order of issues in one structure can't be reflected in another structure. In this case, the sorting of the issues in the hierarchy is done locally, so it existing only locally as well. If you want the set order to appear in other structures as well, the sorting should be based on an attribute that exists in Jira.

For example, you can use the Sort by Rank generator. By default, it sorts issues based on their Ranks from Agile boards. But this generator also allows to manually change the order of issues, updating their Ranks on the boards once they are moved to different places in a structure. For this, the generator has to have the 'Allow changes via Structure'/'Moving items in the structure will update ranks' option (depending on if you have Data Center or Cloud) enabled in its configuration.

After changing the order on one structure, the same order will be reflected in another structure if it has the same issues present there, and if it also has the Rank sorter added.

Alternatively, you can use a Sort generator based on any other field and update the order manually by updating the values in that field (you can do it inline by double-clicking on the value right in the column).

I hope this helps. If you have Jira Data Center or Jira Cloud, and if you have more questions about Structure, please reach out to us directly at our support portal.

hi Stepan

thanks for your answer...

what i meant is that i order the Epics in my structure, and if another user get in to my structure - he does not see the same order that i organized...

in other case - the same order that i did in my structure - disappear when i got into it the day after... (return to default order)

why does it happens? is it relate to the size of structure (we have more than 2000 issues there)? what is the mechanism behind? shouldn't everyone see my order?
