I have a true passion for writing and updating Marketplace Listings, and that's one of the most loved activities from my time working for Atlassian Marketplace app vendors.
It’s so special to me that I have Instagram and LinkedIn stories and posts about updating marketplaces and having the best time ever.
Doing it for years helped me improve in many areas, like:
writing clean marketing messaging because some character limits are insanely low
trying, learning, and knowing many products to represent them well on their app listing page
being better at reaching out and finding important information about the app development and its core functionalities
doing more extensive research about customer use cases and pain points solved by my company’s app
and probably much more.
However, it still surprises me how neglected and unorganized many marketplace listings are. It feels like someone spent a lot of time finding the highest quality ingredients for a special meal and then randomly mixing and slapping it over a broken plate.
In this article, I share my best tips about making your recurring efforts more efficient and also give you a ready-to-use template for your marketplace app updates.
Having only the last updated version in Confluence
I almost immediately got in trouble when I needed to compare versions. I was writing the new version in Confluence using the Marketplace as a reference—one tab open for the update and one tab with the active listing. Once I made the updates on production, a.k.a. the marketplace listing, I had two identical versions and nothing to compare. So, it became hard for me to judge how well the new listing performed in comparison to the old one.
Yes, I can dig into the Confluence page versions, but we can all agree that’s not the ideal approach.
The first and most important line of improvement was to always have two versions - old and new on my page.
The second improvement was highlighting my changes to the content so that my reviewers could go through them quicker and more efficiently. And it’s rare to have everything updated; I tend to keep taglines and messages that prove to be working well.
The third significant improvement was adding all character limits, media sizes and formats, and other small details that could create an informational delay or raise questions within the team. Also, it’s more likely that one marketing person will have the admin permissions for Marketplace listing edits, and the rest of the team will depend on them to provide all content and graphic requirements.
That said, here is my Christmas present to you: a ready-to-use template you can copy and paste into your Confluence space.
Provided to you by one of the most excellent apps ever made: External Share for Confluence. As always, thank you to the Warsaw Dynamics team for making the sharing of Confluence content fun.
I hope this brings you a spark of productivity in the new year.
