Create a board in Jira

5 min
Intermediate

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to:

  • Compare scrum and kanban boards
  • Describe the relationship between boards and projects
  • Create a board in your project

What types of boards can you create?

There are only two types of boards in Jira: kanban boards and scrum boards.
👇 Click the tabs below to explore the two kinds of boards.
Kanban boards don’t have fixed time intervals. New work moves into the board continuously as the team completes other work.
👇Here’s an example of a kanban board.

Relationship between boards and projects

One project with one board

Many projects will have one board to display work for just that project. If you have a team-managed project, you can only create one board that shows work from only that project.
👇For team-managed projects, you can only have one board with data from the project it lives in.

One project with multiple boards

Company-managed projects can have multiple boards.
👉 For example: If you have multiple teams working on one project, you may want to create a board for each team. Then, each team can set up their board to reflect how they work.
👉 Another example: You may want to use both scrum and kanban boards in the same project to track different kinds of work.
Boards are basically just views of work in a project, so you can create multiple boards that contain any selection of those work. Keep in mind, if the boards use different work type schemes, they may also use different workflows. If a work item is on multiple boards, make sure it can move through all statuses on all boards.
👇For company-managed projects, you can create multiple boards.

One board with multiple projects

Company-managed boards can also include work from multiple projects, including team-managed projects.
👉 For example: You may want to create a primary board to display work from multiple related projects or from multiple teams.
👇For company-managed boards, you can include work from multiple projects.

A board’s filter query determines what projects and work display on it. You can include work from multiple projects in the filter query.
Even though the board will query multiple projects, it still only appears in one project. This is the location of the board. You don’t have to show work from the location project on the board.
👉 For example: You want to show work from Project A and Project B on a board in Project C. Your board doesn’t appear in Project A or Project B. It does appear in Project C, but it doesn’t include work from Project C.

For users to see all of the work in a board, they need to have Browse projects permission for all included projects.

Create a board

Because you can create a board using data from one or more projects, you’ll create boards from the Boards page. You can access the boards page from the search bar.
To create a board:

    1. If you create a board based on a new project, enter the project details for your new project.
    2. If you create a board based on an existing project, name your board, select one or more existing projects, then select which project the board should be visible in.
    3. If you create a board based on an existing filter, name your board, select an existing filter, then select which project the board should be visible in.
