  • Explain the benefits of automation
  • Describe how automation works in Atlassian products
  • List several use cases for automation

Build rules that automate manual tasks

Automation enables you to automatically complete tasks with simple rule definitions. It’s very easy to use and doesn’t require coding, making it one of the best tools for admins in Atlassian products.
👇Click the boxes below to explore some of the benefits of automation.

Save time spent on repetitive tasks.

Clean up Jira projects.

Enforce process consistency.

Extend the out-of-the-box functionality of Atlassian products.

Track content lifecycles.

Keep the team informed.

Integrate with other products.

What can you automate?

You can use automation in Jira, Jira Service Management, Jira Product Discovery, and Confluence. There are components of automation rules built for specific products, as well as ones that you can use for any product.
In these products, you can automate using schedules, notifications, integrations, comments, searches, and more. You can create rules that:
  • Create subtasks when a work item is created.
  • Create a Confluence page when a work item is moved to a specific status.
  • Automatically apply specific templates to new pages created in a specific space.
  • Randomly assign high-priority work to team members.
  • Send a message when a work item's due date is approaching or it hasn't been commented on for a day.
  • Create a task for a team member to update documentation in Confluence when a work item is closed.
  • Automatically close old work items with no recent activity.
  • Notify the assignee when an SLA is about to breach.

Who can use automation?

Product admins in Jira and Confluence can create global rules, which are automation rules that apply across multiple projects or spaces.
In Jira, project admins for both company-managed and team-managed projects can only create automation rules for their projects. These are called project rules.
Space admins in Confluence can create automation rules for their spaces, called space rules.
