Women who have inspired me
Bridget Sauer's job (and likely passion) is to inspire #AtlassianAuthors to write and share content on the Atlassian Community. Given that March 8th is International Women's Day, it is little surprise that our monthly topic for article writing inspiration is to share stories about women who have made an impact on ourselves…

Exciting news - Atlassian Summit 2020 is now virtual - and you are invited!
It is unlikely many of us here in New Zealand were going to get a paid work trip to Las Vegas to attend Atlassian Summit 2020. I was looking forward to sharing the free virtual Summit experience with you all in a few weeks but in a effort to help contain the spread of novel coronavirus the in-person event has been replaced…

Share your interesting or note-worthy topics from your company induction
On-boarding or induction often involves a whole lot of information sharing about the role, the company, then physical working environment, and more. One topic recently added at my workplace is about how to use landline phones - something that is just a given to many of use but is not something everyone has had to use that…

Marketplace App Review badge results - Part 1
On the first of November, Emilee Spencer from the Atlassian team inticed the community to leave 2 helpful reviews on the Atlassian Marketplace with the Marketplace App Review badge. Almost 30 people, including myself, submitted reviews and requested the badge. But what about the reviews themselves? I thought I'd share…

Poll apps for Slack
Since the demise of HipChat and Stride and the endorsement from Atlassian when they announced their strategic partnership many of us use Slack to team messaging. Until now we have been using free poll apps but it might be time to invest in something with some bells and whistles. * Simple Poll was great but there is a limit…

How long are your sprints? What day of the week and time of day do they start?
We run company-wide sprints here using Scumban-ish with 1 week long sprints. Sprint changeover for us is during the Wednesday working day. Who out there does fortnight or 4-weekly sprints? Does anyone have the sprint changeover process automated? What are your cons and pros for shorter or longer sprints?

What (if any) framework do you use with Jira Align?
Scrum, XP, and Kanban are all suitable for agile with small teams but has the number of teams increase organisations often look to scaling frameworks. What framework does your organisation use? Nexus? Large-Scale Scrum (LeSS)? Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe)? Disciplined Agile (DA)? Or something else?

Realities of bringing your whole self to work (or not)
These days it is not uncommon to see the term work/life blend used instead of work/life balance. Your work place may encourage you to bring your authentic self and be open to being vulnerable. Why we don’t bring our whole selves to work was published on Atlassian's WorkLife blog earlier this month. It is a long but…

Who do you assign distant backlog tickets to?
Issues often fit into time categories of: * to do in the next 1-2 sprints * to do soon, sitting at the top of someone's backlog * to do some time, maybe, eventually The last category where I work are a mix of project tasks that have been scoped but not scheduled; miscellaneous tasks we will get to "when we have time"; and…

"Certification is not the aim, its the product of learning sometimes"
I saw this comment today on Linked In and wanted to share it with you all. What are your reasons for sitting a professional certification? Some of my motivations in the past have been: * to tick a box because my employer wanted it or I thought it would look good on my resume * to have external validation of the practical…

Important reminder for those with weekly sprints
Do you have weekly sprints and create sprint names using the year and week number? Remember to create the early 2020 sprints as week 01, week 02 etc. This makes sprint selection a lot easier in February when week 10 and week 11 would otherwise sit higher in the dropdown than week 8 and week 9.

Miscellaneous Monday - Predicting the future at the turn of a decade
This article was originally published on 18 December 2009 and shared what experts and other noted prognosticators thought would be in place in 2010 when looking from 1999 or 2000. * "Ninety percent of all consumer goods will be home-delivered." -- trend forecaster Faith Popcorn * Biomonitoring devices that look like…

Let 2019 be the last year you have to update static timestamps in your Confluence copyright notices
As the end of the year approaches it is time to do all those housekeeping tasks like update your public holiday calendar in Jira Service Desk and change the year in the copyright notice in your public Confluence pages. Or perhaps you don't have copyright notices on your public Confluence pages because you don't want this…

Improving monthly customer reports using Confluence and Jira together
I wanted to write an article on how TechTime creates monthly customer reports by harnessing the data and features in Confluence and Jira, with the help of macros and Marketplace Apps of course. It was not long into the article writing process before I remembered why this had not been documented before for internal use,…
