Server-side garbage collection needed after history cleanup — Free plan

Question

Hello,

I removed a large ZIP from a private repository’s Git history using git-filter-repo and force-pushed all branches and tags, but the repository size reported by Bitbucket has not decreased.

How can I permanently remove the old objects and reclaim the storage? Can I trigger garbage collection myself, or does Atlassian Support need to do it? I’m on the Free plan.

Hi m8,

Just to add to this — There is an existing feature request for exactly this functionality: BCLOUD-19771 – Add ability to manually invoke a prune/GC clean-up from the Web UI.

I'd recommend voting for and watching that suggestion to help demonstrate interest.
