Why is my epic panel in the backlog empty?

The left nav epic panel is empty despite the fact that I have many epics in the project. Even if I add an epic from the left nav's "create epic" feature and give a story currently on the backlog that epic, it won't show up as a filter option.

Versions are showing up fine.

My board filter is:

project = RVCL and issuetype in (Story, Bug, Task, Spike) ORDER BY Rank ASC

and my subfilters are:

fixVersion in unreleasedVersions() OR fixVersion is EMPTY

You should add the Epic issue type to your filter:

project = RVCL and issuetype in (Story, Bug, Task, Spike, Epic) ORDER BY Rank ASC
