We use initiatives to manage our top level priorities and manage refinement phases of features or tech enablers of a larger scale. Can you use roadmap for initiatives in NG projects?

the Roadmap feature for the next-gen projects is available only for Epics.
Ok, will support for custom issue types, amongst others, initiatives come later or not at all?
I am not sure about the plans of Attlassian. I am just a Jira user like you:)
I think JIRA nex-gen defined highest level "roadmap level" item as Epic by default. However name and icon of that item can be change to "Initiative" or "Theme" for that matter.
