Right now users can only email xxx@xxx.atlassian.net but we don't want such a long email address. Particularly one with atlassian in the name because most people cannot spell this (outside the jira community). Can we have a friendly email address that comes into our services desk?

It's possible to add a custom email address for your customers to send an email to open tickets and also add a custom email to send notifications to them.
