External lookup from JIRA Field

Question

What to know if it is possible either with JIRA Server Baseline and/or plug-in from Marketplace to perform a lookup in external website/database via a field.

For example, would like to enter a code/number/etc in a JIRA issue field and have it do a lookup in external site with web services and open up the document or other information. The external site has a research function where I can enter the number or code and return findings...I don't need the data back in the JIRA field. I could just do a hyperlink field that would still require the user to go to that website, copy the hyperlink, and then enter.

Is this possible without a script runner field or custom coding?

You can not do it out of the box. If you do not want to buy a plugin, then you can write your own plugin. You would need to create your own custom field.
