Upgrade confluence 5.10.1 to 6.6.2

We are planning to upgrade our confluence from 5.10.2 to 6.6.2. I have read all the upgrade guide provided by atlassian. But, I didn't understand how to setup the synchrony. Can any one explain or give steps to setup synchrony in confluence datacenter?

It's great to hear that you are planning an upgrade.

I understand you are setting up Synchrony for Data Center and are not sure of the steps. Is this one of the guides you already saw: Configuring Synchrony for Data Center ? We also have this doc specifically for Data Center, which has the Synchrony node setup steps: Upgrading Confluence Data Center

Based on the documents, please let us know which part is hard to understand as this can help us with our documentation and of also help me research the specific steps that you need to know.

In our organization we have four confluence nodes. I understood rest of the steps except the above one. Where I have copy these files and what i have to edit in start-synchrony.sh. How to configure this for all the four nodes.

Hello,

Synchrony will run as its own service separate from Confluence. You can do this in a totally new cluster (separate nodes), or you could run Synchrony alongside Confluence, in each of your four nodes. Synchrony will connect to the Confluence database to read/write content.

I would recommend creating a "synchrony" folder in just one node to start with. This can live in the same folder where your Confluence install is. This will be the folder from where you start Synchrony and where you have all of the configuration/jar files/drivers needed to run the Synchrony service. You can use any folder location you'd like, it doesn't have to be in any specific location.
⚠️ One thing to note - the synchrony-related files will not be in your 5.10.1 instance. You will have to upgrade to 6+ or just install version 6+ to be able to find these files and put them into the Synchrony folder.

Setup
Once you have a Confluence 6 install folder, you can copy the entire "/synchrony" "folder from under <confluence_install>/bin/ to the new location of your choice, the <confluence_home>/synchrony-standalone.jar file, and the database driver from <confluence_install>/confluence/WEB-INF/lib to your new /synchrony folder. You can then edit the start-synchrony.bat/.sh file and follow the instructions in the file to fill out your configuration for Synchrony. For example, if your database driver file was copied to /opt/atlassian/synchrony/ojdbc7.jar, your DATABASE_DRIVER_PATH in the start-synchrony.sh file will look like this:


DATABASE_DRIVER_PATH="/opt/atlassian/synchrony/ojdbc7.jar"

The comments in the start-synchrony files should tell you what to do, as there are several variables that need to be configured, but let us know if you have any questions on specific parameters. I hope that helps. 😊
