How do I import custom fields that do not have a corresponding field definition in Jira

when I try to import issues from a CSV file I would also like to import a Comment.  Although the Comments field exists in Jira it does not appear as an option to map to on the drop down list.  Can this drop-down list be edited to add a new custom field so I can map it?
