Updating custom date field using workflow post function?

Hi,

We'd like a custom date field to be updated automatically when an issue moves to the last state in our workflow. For e.g. add the project end date as today's date when issue moves to "deployment complete" phase in our workflow. Is there a way to do this using "post function" in workflow configuration? I can only find the simple fields in the "post function" configuration. Can we update custom fields using post function?

We don't have the script runner plugin installed, is it possible without writing custom script?
