How to create amazing plugins for dashboards on Jira?

Hi,

I'm a big fan of dashboards and I usually use external tools for creating them. I have always wonder how can we create visualy impacting and useful plugins, to insert them on a Jira Dashboard...?

I have honestly no idea where to start and what is possible to do. I have only use the standard plugins offered by Jira.

Can I create plugins from scratch using data obtained by JQL and add some visual enhancements with CSS or HTML5?
