This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Labeling an Issue
We want to add the Label field onto the list view item on the backlog. Is there anyway to add this field?
Can't you click the Board -> Configure -> Card Layout, and then add the Label field to the Backlog?
I'm using JIRA Sotware so perhaps this is not available for your version.

@Chris Dunne I am using the cloud version of Jira and Dont see this option for configuring Board under Jira settings. What am I missing?
UPDATE: I figured it-> Looks like it had changed a bit in the new version.
Where did you find it? I am looking for it also and I can't find it anywhere.
