Setting Narrow Layout as default - does it not work?

I am trying to figure out how to set the narrow layout as a default. I know of various settings but none seem to do the trick consistently.

I know that there is a global Confluence setting for this and it's already set to narrow on our site.

Then there is a setting per User which I've also set to narrow (or rather disabled the wide setting)

There used to be a per-space setting as well, which seems to have been replaced by the density setting now.

Even with all these settings enabled, I am still getting the wide page as a default for new content.

Does anybody else have the same problem? Is there something I am missing?

Hi @Rebekka Heilmann (viadee) I know it might sound crazy. But have you tried changing the default page width setting to Wide/or Max (scroll down and click the save configurations settings button). Then set the default page width setting back to Narrow again (remember to scroll down and click the save configurations settings button)? It might be worth a try. I was able to test this method out on the my space by changing it from default Wide, then Narrow, and the new pages all responded to the configuration setting I had selected. Hope that helps.

Hi Rebekka, you have covered the three places most people miss, so I would test it in a slightly different way before assuming the setting is broken.

First, try a completely blank page in a test space, rather than a page made from a template or copied from an existing page. Templates and copied pages keep the width they were saved with, so they will not pick up the new site default, and the site setting does not change pages that already exist.

Second, double-check the order of the settings: the site default sets the starting point for new pages, but your personal editor setting can override it for pages you create. Make sure 'Enable full width as the default for new content' is switched off in your personal Editor settings, then refresh and try that blank page again.

Third, do not rely on the space Content density setting for this - that changes spacing, not page width, so it will not make a wide page narrow.

If a blank page still opens wide after those checks, it is worth trying the same test signed in as another user, which will show whether it is a personal setting still getting in the way or a site-wide issue. For any page that is already wide, open it in Edit, switch off its full-width setting, and publish - that part has to be done page by page.

As you can see in the screenshots, everything is already set to the correct option and I am creating completely fresh content; so that's not really helpful

Assuming this would have worked. Co-Admins set it to wide rather than narrow so now this overwrites any personal settings anyway.

What still works is overwrite a global "narrow" setting with a personal "enable wide" setting - just not the other way around.
