Unable to Change Test Case Status in Xray Test Execution

Question

I am facing an issue in Cisco Xray (Testing Board) where I am unable to change the status of a test case in Test Execution.

I am able to successfully create a Test Repository, add test cases to a Test Plan, and create a Test Execution. However, when I open the Test Execution, the added test case remains in the To Do status, and I am unable to change its status.

Interestingly, my teammates who are part of the same Cisco team are able to change the status of test cases in Test Execution without any issues. However, I am experiencing this issue despite being part of the same cisco teams.

I'd add one important distinction to Lucija's answer.

In Xray, the Test Run status (TODO, EXECUTING, PASS, FAIL, etc.) is not the same as the Jira issue workflow status.

Since your teammates can update the results while you cannot, I'd focus first on access and execution restrictions rather than Jira workflow transitions.

A few questions to narrow this down:

* Are you using Xray Cloud or Xray Data Center?
* Can you open the Test Run execution screen, but the status controls are disabled, or are you unable to access the execution screen at all?
* Does this happen with every Test Execution, including one you've created yourself?
* Are you assigned to the Test Run, and are your effective permissions identical to those of a colleague who can execute it?

Depending on your Xray deployment and configuration, execution restrictions may apply independently of Jira workflow transitions.

I'd start by checking the workflow to see whether there are any conditions or validators that prevent certain users from transitioning the test case to another status.

I'd also check the relevant space/project permissions and your group membership to make sure you're not missing any permissions required to perform the transition. Since your teammates can change the status, it could be a permissions or workflow restriction specific to your user.

If everything looks correct and the issue persists, I'd recommend contacting Xray Support for further investigation. However, I'd start with the permissions and workflow checks, as they may be enough to resolve the issue. 🙂
