Hi everyone,
We are sharing a quick update regarding a bug fix and validation improvement on Remote Issue Links in Jira Cloud.
Currently, while fields like Link Title, Global ID, and Relationship validate a standard 255-character limit, a few other fields (such as URL, Summary, and Icon attributes) have been missing upper-bound size validation. In rare cases where oversized data is specified, this can lead to unexpected reliability problems and downstream failures when trying to clone, copy, or migrate those work items.
To resolve this inconsistency and protect service reliability, we are adding the missing validation checks to ensure all remote link attributes have appropriate upper bounds.
Over 99% of existing remote links across Jira Cloud are already well within these bounds, so typical usage and integrations will not see any impact.
What is a Remote Issue Link?
If you've ever linked an external webpage, Confluence page from another site, or third-party tool to a Jira work item using Link issue → Web link (or via apps/scripts using the Remote Link REST API), that’s a Remote Issue Link! They allow you to attach external URLs, titles, and summaries directly to your work items without creating an internal issue-to-issue link.
Validation Details
Input validation is being added across the previously unbounded fields on creation and update:
- Summary: 50 KB
- URL, Icon URL / Status Icon URL: 64 KB
- Icon Title / Status Icon Title / Status Icon Link / Status Description: 10 KB
(Existing 255-character limits on fields such as Title, Global ID, Relationship, and Application Type/Name remain unchanged).
Behavior for Existing Data & Operations
- Viewing Existing Data: Existing work items with remote links continue to display normally.
- Editing: If you edit an existing work item that has oversized link data, reducing the field to a valid size will allow you to save normally.
- Cloning & Cloud-to-Cloud Copying: Cloning and Cloud-to-Cloud copy operations (such as Selective Data Copy) process data through standard work item validation. If a work item contains an oversized remote link, the operation may fail until the link on the source work item is brought within limits.
- Import & Export: Full Site Imports and standard read-only exports (like CSV) continue to work as expected.
- Migrating from Data Center or Server: No manual action will be needed. If a Remote Issue Link exceeds the supported size, it will be added to the work item as an attachment, so the migration isn’t blocked and the data is preserved.
Recommendation for Admins & Developers
If you maintain custom scripts, automations, or apps that programmatically attach remote links, ensure payloads stay within standard boundaries (e.g., avoiding excessively large URLs or serialized data in summaries).
If you run into an unexpected error when cloning or copying a specific work item, check if the attached remote links on that work item contain unusually large content.
