I would like my board to display each epic but I am unable to change the swimlane view - how can I show each epic? I did select group by epic but only status displays.
Hi @Christine Erickson π
If you've already selected Group by Epic but can only see the status columns, the key thing to know is that columns and swimlanes serve different purposes: columns represent statuses, while swimlanes organize issues by epic.
Hereβs what Iβd check:
If you're still only seeing statuses, check that the issues belong to epics and that your board filter includes them.
You can find more details in Atlassian's official documentation:
Could you let me know whether you're using a company-managed or team-managed project? That would help me point you to the right setting.
Hi @Christine Erickson
In company-managed Jira boards, columns represent statuses. To organize by Epic, go to Board settings β Layout β Swimlanes β Epics.
Epics will appear as horizontal swimlanes rather than columns.

To display each Epic on your board, go to Board Settings β Swimlanes and set Swimlanes = Epics. Jira will then create one swimlane per Epic and group the related issues underneath it.
If you can share whether this is a team-managed or company-managed project and a screenshot of your board settings, the community can help pinpoint the exact cause.
Hope this helps!

Ismail.
Hi @Christine Erickson ,
Can you maybe share how things look like at the moment? Note that this is a public forum so keep that in mind when sharing sensitive info β οΈ
Like the question here is whether you'd like to display Epic as a card on a board or are we talking about something else π
There's this documentation about swimlanes: Configure swimlanes, but again, it depends on what exact experience you're looking for.
Group by β None
Group by β Epic

Hi @Christine Erickson, The swimlane feature works differently from status columns.
Here's what to check: Go to **Board settings β Layout β Swimlanes** and select **Epics** from the dropdown. This creates horizontal swimlanes (one per epic) with your issues grouped underneath, separate from the status columns. If you're still only seeing statuses, verify that: - Your issues are linked to epics - Your board filter includes those issues - The epics themselves are included in your view You can also drag and drop epics in your backlog to reorder swimlanes. If you want even more flexibility organizing by epic - like adding more columns, filtering, or viewing additional fields alongside hierarchy - you might also explore JXL, a marketplace app my team and I are working on, that lets you build spreadsheet-like hierarchical views of issues grouped by epic or any other structure you need. Best regards,Paul
