jira

Question

Hello,

I would like to know more about JIRA as I am currently shifting my career into project management. the price to get the JIRA on my computer, the price for individual trainings. I am not sure abouy what I should learn from JIRA to help in my job search. I am not an IT expert at all and I am a bit lost with all the programs, software tools that a PM needs to know. I heard that as a PM we have to know about JIRA. However I don't know the fundamental parts to know within the software. Thank you very much.

You can start up a "Free" Jira space as well - you'll lack some finer features - but you'll at least have the overall picture of Jira itself.

Hi @Normaris Consulting

It’s understandable to feel overwhelmed when transitioning into project management. You don’t need to be an IT expert or know how to code to start using Jira.

Jira helps teams organize tasks, assign responsibilities, and track progress. How much you need to learn depends on the roles you’re targeting, so I recommend checking job descriptions to see which tools employers request.

You can start with Jira Cloud’s free plan, which supports up to 10 users. You access it through a web browser, so there’s no need to install software on your computer. The free plan is a good starting point for practice:

Training

Atlassian offers free learning resources, including a beginner tutorial:

If you prefer one-to-one training, prices vary by provider. Before booking, ask whether the training is suitable for someone without a technical background and includes practical project management exercises. I would try the free resources first.

What to learn first

For an entry-level project management role, I would focus on:

* Creating tasks and assigning owners, priorities, and due dates.
* Using a board to track work through “To Do,” “In Progress,” and “Done.”
* Organizing larger pieces of work into smaller tasks.
* Understanding backlogs and sprints if you’re targeting Agile teams.
* Using basic filters, dashboards, and reports to communicate progress.

A useful practice exercise is to create a small project, such as planning an event. Add 10–15 tasks, set deadlines, track progress, and prepare a brief status update. This gives you a concrete example to discuss in an interview.

Alongside Jira, build your skills in planning, stakeholder communication, managing risks, and tracking budgets. My recommendation is to learn one tool through hands-on practice rather than trying to master every project management application at once. Happy learning!

Jira is a broad subject - many facets.

I suggest starting with the Atlassian Learning paths to get a gist of what it is in terms of the tool.

There's also a lot of YouTube's out there - Robert Hean in particular has a long list of courses - but that depends on how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go.

I suggest "Getting Started with Teamwork Collection" - then pick the features that get your attention.

There's also the following Certifications:

ASA-900 - Jira Essentails

ACP-120 -Jira Administration

ACP-620 (Pending Retirement) - Jira Project Management

I'd suggest the "Free Certs" - but they don't really have one for "Jira" itself - but they can be an"Easy win" in fleshing out your resume.

(Atlassian Certificate Holders)

They do for Rovo, Loom, Forge, JSM+Rovo, and the Cloud Org Fundamentals (All Atlassian Apps).

Happy hunting.
