Trying to find the field renderer option for paragraph custom fields

Hi, I am trying to enable rich-text functionality for a custom paragraph field and despite extensive efforts to find the setting, I've not had any success.

The documentation that I came across was part updated with new Jira lingo mixed in with old references to stuff that's been renamed or changed in the platform but based on my interpretation these are the steps that I followed:-

Settings → Work Items → Field Schemes (Formerly Configurations) → Locate and select the scheme/space" —? locate the field and select "View Field" from the menu on the right —> Edit field

No options to set the renderer there.

I also tried using the old Custom Field UI but couldn't find anything there either

Custom Field —> Locate and select "Edit field"

Nothing in there either.

I have been through all of the menu options for the field in both the Fields and Field Schemes menu but to no avail (Spaces specific field behavior, Context + default field value etc).

I did encounter a message advising that the field needed to be upgraded in order to support wiki rendering, I thought that might have been the fix but after checking it was not.

If anyone is able to point me to where the option is hidden, I'd really appreciate it

Looks like they moved it last I looked.

So here's a possible map:

Go to the Field Scheme in question - make sure your in the edit context and not just browsing.
Find the Paragraph field in question - click the name of the name itself - not the "…" option
You should see a pop out tray mentioning about the Field renderer - which points you to update field.

See if that gets you there.

I show a screenshot but my org would get REALLY angry at me. 🤣

So at the risk of sounding completely insane.

(Note I did test this in our sandbox)

The "Renderer" in this context is entirely "moot"

Rich Text == is Wiki Style now by default.

Rovo calls it "ADF" style markdown or something to that effect.

After arguing with it about "Field configuration" no longer being a "thing" it finally relented and pointed this out.
So I picked a random space with a "Rich Text" paragraph - like your field - almost same name in fact.
Which is labeled as "Rich Text"

And I was able to use wiki markdown with it.

Test I used:

Type ## and then some text - that triggers Header 2 type

Type ** with a word like I'm trying here ** and its bold type.

And the list goes on.

At least according to Rovo this proves the Wiki Renderer is present even if it saying its Rich Text.

This presumes your in the Cloud of course - and the other usual things.
So looks like they just are making it all the more confusing.

I Really hope you find out this is the case - otherwise I think ill need to ask Atlassian for a Strait Jacket and not an Expert T-Shirt for my ACAE cert. 🤣

TLDR Version - you don't need to change the renderer - it's already there.

Hi @Jamie Jones,

The missing selector matches Atlassian’s announced renderer change: Jira Cloud is moving to the wiki-style renderer only, removing the old renderer setting. Once that change reaches your site, there’s no separate switch to enable.

Your screenshot shows Release Note is a paragraph field supporting rich text, but the “Edit field” dialog configures its name and help text not the content entered on a work item.

Where is formatting actually missing: when editing Release Note on a Jira work item, or on the JSM customer portal? A screenshot of that editor would help distinguish the remaining problem.

My apologies, I should have explained the issue behind the ask….

One of our JSW space leads submitted a support request to enable rich text for one of the custom fields being used in their project/space; this was with the expectation that the rich text toolbar should appear when editing the field (as it does for the "description" field for example).

As shown in the screenshot below for , rich-text/wiki-renderer is enabled but no toolbar appears when editing.

Does "supports rich-text" just mean that the field will support pasting rich text pasted into the field only (i.e. no rich text editing tools)?

That's not "Release Notes" - what's the config/details for the field you are displaying? (Assessment Notes in this case)

That clarification helps a lot, because the missing toolbar points more toward the field type or configuration than the renderer itself. I’d check the exact details of the “Assessment Notes” field next, as Matthew suggested.
