How do you keep Microsoft Entra ID and JSM Assets synchronized automatically?

Hi everyone,

we are currently looking into integrating Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) with JSM Assets and would like to understand how others are solving this.

Our goal is to have information from Entra ID (e.g. users and user attributes) automatically updated in Assets, ideally on a daily basis or whenever changes occur.

We have tested the Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) Beta Integration by Atlassian Labs, but currently the import needs to be triggered manually.

We are therefore open to different approaches and would be interested in your experience:

How do you synchronize Entra ID with Assets?
Are you using an Atlassian-built solution, another app, API, automation, or a custom solution?
Is there a recommended Atlassian solution for this use case?
Are there any limitations or things we should consider?

Would be great to hear how others have implemented this.

Entra ID Integration requires manual imports because Jira Automation scheduling doesn't support External imports.

If you're on Premium or Enterprise, the native sol. is Assets Data Manager, which natively supports scheduled refreshes (daily, weekly, or monthly) for Entra users and devices.

Also don´t forget that SCIM provisions Atlassian user accounts, not Assets objects, and true real-time event-driven sync requires the Microsoft Graph API or a third-party app. Which JSM plan are you currently on ?

We have an Enterprise Plan and would like to connect Entra ID with Assets. Our goal is to have a schema with Entra ID users so that we can track related hardware, software, etc.

If we use Data Manager, should we install this app? Data Manager Clients for JSM Assets | Atlassian Marketplace

I’m just wondering because it is a ZIP file, while we have everything in the cloud. Why would we need to install it, and where would it need to be installed?

Maybe you have a guide or some documentation on how to set this up?

for cloud-to-cloud sources like Entra ID User, you don't need the local Data Manager Adapters ZIP client since Atlassian connects directly via Microsoft Graph APIs.

The setup involves registering an application in Microsoft Entra ID with User.Read.All Graph API permissions, generating a Client Secret, and adding the cloud-enabled Entra ID User data source directly inside Data Manager using your Tenant ID, Client ID, and Secret. Once authenticated, you can configure your automated refresh schedule entirely in Cloud without maintaining local infrastructure.

Go to Assets → Assets settings → Data Manager and enable Data Manager if it isn’t enabled already.
Make sure you have the required Data Manager Admin / Adapters Admin permissions.
In Microsoft Entra ID, register an application and collect:
- Tenant ID
- Client ID
- Client secret
In Assets → Data Manager → Object classes, open the People object class and add an Entra ID User data source.
Set the connection mode to cloud-to-cloud and enter the Entra application details.
Run the first fetch manually and check/map the attributes.
Once the first fetch has completed, use Schedule a refresh and configure it to run daily.

Hi @Anna Kochura !

I’ve solved this for several clients using ScriptRunner for Jira. If you’re looking for a free solution, ScriptRunner Connect’s free tier also allows you to run scripts and sync with Entra up to three times a day.

In this particular case, I’d probably recommend a script-based solution. It gives you much more flexibility to tailor the solution to your organisation’s exact requirements, rather than having to adapt your processes around an application’s configuration.

If you’re interested, we could discuss the requirements in more detail and see what would make the most sense for your setup.
