I am trying to send an email with the epic that is being canceled along with the stories linked to that epic. I got the first part, but I cant seem to find the smart value for stories that are linked to epics. I have tried this:

Depending on you Jira version you can use the Lookup Issues action to get the issues linked to the Epic using a JQL statement.
Look for that action in the Automation Actions documentation. If it is available it will also show the syntax for listing each issue in the result set.
