With more than one field with same name, how referenced in a query?

Seems there are two "release" fields on our issues.   The fields were not added under our account, not "Custom Fields".    However, we would like to use one of these fields for recording and selecting the issue related software release.

How do I find the query field name for each of the two "release" fields?  

Any query fails with:
      release is "tug524" AND ... etc.

A query succeeds with:
      release is not EMPTY AND ... etc.

The resulting list has two columns for the releases.  Under the configure columns, two "release as short text" field appear (checked for inclusion).   

 Any clues?

Can you provide an image an an issue showing the two "release" fields you are referencing, and point them out?

Are you working with issues in a Company Managed project or a Team Managed project? Get that information by going to the View All Projects page under the Projects menu. That will show you a list of all projects to which you have access. Find the project in the list, and tell us what is says for your project in the Type column.

These sound like custom fields. If they exist in a Team Managed project then they will not appear in the global Custom Fields screen, because they are local to just that one project.

If you want a field where you can select from the values that you set up on the Releases screen...

...you will need to use a field that is of the Version Picker type.

There is a system defined field called Fix Versions that you can add to your issues, or you can create a custom field or the Version Picker type from the global Custom Fields screen accessed by clicking the gear icon (in the upper right corner near your avatar), selecting Issues, then Custom Fields.
