I'm not doing anything special. My github repo is private and I do provide the required authorization details when choosing the import option. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

May I ask which authentication method are you using for HTTPS? If you are using username/password, I would suggest instead using a personal access token instead:https://docs.github.com/en/authentication/keeping-your-account-and-data-secure/creating-a-personal-access-token
