Using JQL in APIs

Is there a way to limit the number of columns (via JSON) returned from an API call that utilizes JQL (asing for a friend)......

I work with a BI developer and we are starting to think that this may be causing slowness in fetching large datasets.

Which version and which endpoint are you using?

The above documentation talks about a fields parameter that you can use to specify the fields to be returned in the results.
