Can I create a custom field that contains jira keys? (e.g. similar to links)

Question

Objective - identifying ad hoc parent Jiras for a set of changes (other Jiras) to be linked to that Jira.

Details:

* Single select, limited to valid Jira IDs for any project defined (and entitled) on the server

* Standard Jira server release (ie without configuring additional plug-ins)

Notes:

* Understood, can approximate the above with Links,

for example, define a new link type (Parent/Child)

but would like to be able to add the parent Jira to the field (e.g. sort by parent field to group all Jiras together, including the parent)

Thank you Robert,

I am aware of at least one plug-in (customfield) that provides this capability, but alas, it is very difficult to get approval to install new plug-ins.

But, I do have scriptrunner already installed on the server - so will absolutely try this out.

By default,  i do not think you can do it with Jira.

You need to use a plugin.

Scriptrunner for jira comes for example with one:
