git clone on command line complains about manifest issues

Question

I am trying to clone a repo done by a contractor for us, and when I type the usual clone command on an Ubuntu 20.04 command line, I get this.

Note: I setup an SSH key and followed the instructions to add it to the git credential manager.

An assembly specified in the application dependencies manifest (Atlassian.Bitbucket.UI.deps.json) was not found:
package: 'HarfBuzzSharp.NativeAssets.Linux', version: '2.6.1.7'
path: 'runtimes/linux-x64/native/libHarfBuzzSharp.so'

fatal: helper error (140): Unknown

Then it prompts me for my password, which I do enter, and get this:

remote: Login failed due to incorrect login credentials or method.

Now what?

Looks like an https option issue. The default clone command uses https. Picking the SSH in the dropdown gave a different URL and that worked for git clone. Many years of github versus being new on bitbucket complicates things.
