Need Git GC on remote

I have a repository that is approaching the size limit of 4GB. It was ported over from a previous repository that hit the size limit due to some large files being pushed. However, the long commit history seems to be inflating the repository size greatly. I have tried several methods on my machine to reduce the repo size, but to no avail. I would appreciate any assistance with running a gc on the remote side.

Hi @felix.peng and welcome to the community!

I can see two repositories, owned by your personal workspace, that are close to the 4 GB limit. I ran a git gc for both of them and their size has been reduced. In case your request concerns a repo owned by a workspace other than your personal one, please let me know the first two letters of the workspace and repo so I can identify it and run a git gc for it.

If you decide to proceed with the steps I mention in that post and rewrite history in the repo with BFG, please keep in mind that the repo's size will get increased again once you push your changes. The repo will then need another git gc for the old commits (prior to history rewrite) to get removed and for its size to get reduced.

You can let me know here and I can then run another git gc for the repo. It is not possible for users to trigger git gc for their remote repos at the moment, but we have a feature request that you can vote for and add yourself as a watcher for updates: https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/BCLOUD-11593
