Cannot choose state if multiple states assigned to a column

Question

Have story with single sub-task.  Agile board has two states mapped to final column.   Impossible to choose which of the two states is chosen when task dragged to final column.  With the single sub-task the choice is shown on the final column as

Done

Closed

But sub-task is same size as choices in final column and no way to move it up or down.  Appears random choice is made.  It is possible with more sub tasks.

I'd tend to agree with you there - it's definitely not well highlighted.

Also, in the case where you've got two choices, it's nice that they change colour depending on which you're going to land it on, but because it's binary, I don't think it's at all clear which is actually "highlighted".  If there's three or more, it's obvious because you've got 1 box a different colour, but with 2, the highlighting pretty much doesn't help.

Thanks for the answer - you are correct and in the scenario you have to grab the issue in the top half to drag and drop it to the top status and vice-versa for the bottom one.    The target also changes colour from blue to green to show which one is selected although the colour change is not obvious.   I think the issue is that it is not obvious what needs to be done and this indication is somewhat difficult ot see.   A more obvious indication like red border or changing the background would have helped.   Now the solution is apparent,  it can be incorporated in to the process but it has caused some wrong transitions to be made.

The status available in a column are split evenly into regions when you try to drag a card into that column, and you need to make sure you drag the card into the right region.

I've never had a problem dragging a card into the right status - it's not random, it picks the one the cursor is in, or the one the card covers more of when I let go

And yes, you can't drag between status in a column, which is annoying.  Atlassian have it logged, but have said they're not going to do anything about it for quite a while.
